Measurement Kit

Thank you for choosing Archive, and for supporting things made slowly and carefully, close to home.

We’d much rather measure your feet with you in the workshop. When that’s not possible, this kit lets us get to know your feet from wherever you are.

Before you begin, watch the short video walkthrough:

What we need

  1. Two tracings of each foot
  2. Short heel circumference
  3. Instep circumference
  4. Ball circumference

Take your measurements

Put on the socks you plan to wear most often with your shoes.

You can follow along with the video as you work or use the visual guide below.

Foot Tracings

Trace each foot carefully while keeping your weight naturally distributed. First, trace the outer contour with your pen held perfectly vertical. Then, make a second pass with the pen tilted inward at a 45° angle to capture where your sole meets the ground.

Measurement step: tracing around the foot with the pen held upright at 90 degrees.
Measurement step: tracing around the foot with the pen angled at 45 degrees.

Ball Circumference

Find the widest part of your foot across the joints below your big and pinky toes, then wrap the tape around these two points. Ensure it stays snug against your foot without pulling too tight, and record the “ball” measurement on your sheet.

Measurement step: wrapping a tape measure around the ball of the foot.

Instep Circumference

Wrap the tape around the high point of your arch and across the top of your instep, just in front of your ankle. Ensure it stays snug against your foot without pulling too tight, then record the “instep” measurement on your sheet.

Measurement step: measuring around the instep with a tape measure.

Short Heel Circumference

Wrap the tape from the bottom of your heel around to the front of your ankle. Make sure it stays snug against your foot without pulling too tight, then record the “heel” measurement on your sheet.

Measurement step: measuring the short heel, from the back of the heel around the top of the foot.

Send them back

Place your completed tracings and measurements in the supplied envelope.

If a return label is already attached, just drop it off at the carrier. Otherwise, email info@archiveleather.com and we’ll send you a prepaid label to print at home.

We take it from here

Your measurements come back to the workshop, where they become part of the process of making your pair.

One pair at a time.

Properly made.
